Staff Development

The Kirkwood Community College Staff Development Program is designed to contribute to the professional growth and development of Kirkwood's support, technical, service, professional staff and administrative employees by providing educational opportunities through course work, seminars, workshops, group activities and attendance at conferences. More specifically, Kirkwood's Staff Development objectives are to:

  1. provide opportunities to update job knowledge and/or skills in specialty areas.
  2. respond to specific requests from individual employees or supervisors to provide specialized training when necessary.
  3. recognize employees for their role in the success of the college.
  4. increase awareness of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle through a campus-wide Wellness program.

Opportunities for Involvement:

1. Kirkwood Staff Development Programs:

A variety of creative Staff Development programs and activities are implemented each year. Program development is based on responses from employee needs assessments. Program examples include:

  1. Staff Development Days are held each year during March and provides staff with an opportunity to choose from a variety of professional and personal development workshops to attend.
  2. Ice Breaker Lunches are a way for new employees to learn about the many offerings at Kirkwood. At the lunch, new employees meet and mingle, enjoy lunch, and take a quick tour of the campus. Each month, a presenter speaks about his/her department to learn about Kirkwood.
  3. Lunch and Learns are brown bag lunches in which employees can eat lunch and listen to a presenter to learn more about Kirkwood.
  4. KCELT Training offers a variety of computer classes.

2. KCC Courses & Continuing Education

All Kirkwood full-time employees can attend Kirkwood credit or non-credit classes free of charge according to the guidelines in the employee handbook. Part-time and adjunct employees are also eligible to attend one class per year as indicated in the guidelines of the part-time employee handbook.

3. Outside Workshops and Activities

Full-time staff and administrators needing training in an area not covered through on-campus Staff Development programs or Kirkwood courses may apply for funding to attend an off-campus conference or workshop.
