TRIO is a program specifically designed to assist students in the transition to higher education and the college environment. The staff provides Kirkwood students with advice, guidance, and support.

TRIO SSS Information

The TRIO SSS Traditional student support program provides individualized guidance and support to first-generation students, low-income students, and students with disabilities. TRIO provides a welcoming environment to study, make friends, and get advice on your studies, finances, jobs, and the transfer process to 4-year schools. Our goal is to make sure your time at Kirkwood is successful and fulfilling.

Kirkwood Community College’s TRIO SSS ESL program provides opportunities for academic support, social engagement, and cultural activities for non-native English speakers, ELA students, or students who speak a language other than English at home.

Who can join TRIO SSS Traditional?

To be eligible for the TRIO program, a student must meet one of the following eligibility criteria and be a citizen or national of the United States:

  • First-generation college student (neither parent has earned a bachelor's degree) 
  • Low income
  • Physical or mental disability

Who can join TRIO SSS ESL?

  • Be enrolled in English Language Acquisition classes (at least level five), a non-native English speaker, or speak in another language at home.
  • Meet at least one of these three criteria:
    • Be a First Generation student (Neither parent nor guardian has a four-year college degree)
    • Low income
    • Have a documented disability

TRIO programs are federally funded under the Higher Education Act of 1965. TRIO programs help students overcome class, social, and cultural barriers in higher education.
