FERPA at Kirkwood FAQ

Welcome to our college-wide training regarding the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

According to the Family Policy Compliance Office (FPCO): "The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education."

Kirkwood FERPA Training

This Kirkwood-specific training was developed to empower and equip college employees with the skills, knowledge, tools, and resources to do their jobs effectively. It is college priority that all employees feel adequately prepared to deal with any situation revolving around sensitive records. 

The course should be completed as soon as possible. It stays open to you and available for reference even after you finish. 

Frequently Asked Questions

ALL employees are expected to have a strong working knowledge of FERPA and how it applies to their job role. Please check with your supervisor to learn more about your specific requirements.

This training was designed and developed to help you as an employee deal with handling sensitive records safely and reliably. In the event a FERPA violation occurs, we will use our training completion records to support any investigation that ensues.

No. This is a college-wide compliance training course and does not qualify for professional renewal credit.

No. We are not able to substitute for another college's FERPA training. This training is particular to Kirkwood Community College.

Yes. You will get transcribable HR credit on your employee record. 

Yes. All managers and supervisors will have access to their employee's completion records via the performance review process.
