Autism Program @ Kirkwood (ASK)

ASK is a no-cost voluntary program for Kirkwood Community College students with autism spectrum disorder. ASK works with students to create an individualized plan that builds academic and social skills necessary for college success.

Our program includes weekly meetings with autism advocates and structured social events. We integrate Kirkwood resources, community partnerships, and research-based interventions and curriculums.

How to Apply

  1. Schedule an informational meeting
  2. Submit ASK Application
  1. Register for at least two Kirkwood credit courses.
  2. Request accommodations through the Learning Services department and provide documentation of an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
  • Executive Functioning: Time and assignment management, organization, problem-solving
  • Social Skills: Verbal/non-verbal communication, behaviors, hidden social rules, relationships
  • Connection to Resources: Advising, accommodations, tutoring, career services, IVRS, counseling
  • Skills to Independence: Self-advocacy, resilience, budgeting, planning
  • Job Readiness: Resumes, interview practice, hidden curriculum on the job
  • Housing
  • In-home support/OT assistance
  • Transportation to and from campus
  • Para education support*

* A student who requires or desires para education support is responsible for arranging and paying for this type of service.

Autism Advocates are available Monday through Friday, typically from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
