High School Completion FAQ

Have questions about our high school completion services? We've got the answers! Here are some of the most commonly asked questions about our program.

Taking a High School Class

No.  HSDL courses are high school credit only, not college or AP.  Kirkwood does offer dual enrollment and Career Academies if wanting college credit.

Yes and No.

No.  If the student is still in high school and using these credits to go towards a diploma, then the school should be involved.  This ensures the correct course will be taken and accepted.  Contact hsdl@kirkwood.edu if special circumstance.  Schools can go here to register.

Yes.  If the student has graduated high school and taking a course to satisfy a college pre-requisite (for instance, completing Physics for the Nursing or Pharmacy programs at the University of Iowa).  University students can call 319-784-1510 to register.

No.  HSDL courses are asynchronous, so can start/stop any time of year.  HSDL is available in the summer too.  Courses begin on the day the registration is processed.

When the school registers a student, there is a contact person to send a completion certificate.  That certificate can be used as an official record to put in the student’s file and update their transcript.

If a University student registers, then a transcript will be sent to the University of Iowa Admissions office to update your file.

Each registration is given four months to finish starting from that registration date.  The school can contact hsdl@kirkwood.edu if adjustments are needed or to match academic calendar.

All the material (packet and online) is ready and available if wanting to compete the course faster than four months.

No, they are not the same.  Most of the packet courses have textbooks that are high-interest, low-readability.  Often, students taking packet courses would also receive monitoring from the school.

The online courses do not share anything with the packet— they have different structures, assignments, and assessments.  A self-motivated student could go through an online course with little (or no) supervision.

Yes, all the online courses have facilitators.  Facilitators are licensed teachers in that content area, will grade any assignments or tests, and can be a resource for asking a question.

No.  All the online material is preloadedit is not live instruction.  The student can access it 24/7 and proceed at whatever pace (but finishing in the four month window) they want.  This allows the courses to be asynchronous.

Some courses are one semester, some courses have two semesters, and some students only need one out of the two semesters.  As such, HSDL is $195 per registration.  If a student takes both semesters of a course, then two registrations.

The school will be invoiced for the course when they register their student.  If the school wants the parent to pay instead, that is negotiated between the school and the parent.

If a University student registers, they can provide credit card information when calling to register for the course.

If requested within 14 days of registration and the student hasn’t completed any work for the course, then a refund will be issued.  Contact hsdl@kirkwood.edu if questions.
