Guest Student Checklist

For Students Taking Courses at Kirkwood Without Earning a Degree

Many students take one or two classes at Kirkwood without pursuing a full degree. Whether you're looking to transfer credits, complete a prerequisite, or just explore a new subject, this checklist will walk you through the process.

Who Is a Guest Student?
You're a guest student if you're planning to take one or more courses at Kirkwood without pursuing a Kirkwood degree. This may include:

  • Students enrolled at another college or university who want to transfer credits back to their home institution
  • Individuals taking classes for professional development or personal enrichment
  • Anyone needing to complete prerequisites for another program or school

When you apply, be sure to select “Not Seeking a Kirkwood Degree.”

Planning to Transfer Courses to Another College?
If you’re taking Kirkwood courses to fulfill requirements at another institution, keep the following in mind:

  • Talk to your advisor at your home college or university before registering to ensure the class will count toward your degree
  • Each institution has its own rules about:
    • GPA transfer policies
    • Transfer credit limits
    • Whether a course meets your major requirements
  • Start planning early; enrollment can fill quickly, and some courses have prerequisites
  • You are responsible for knowing your home institution’s policies — Kirkwood staff cannot determine whether a course will transfer

For specific courses, consult published transfer equivalencies to see how each course transfers and counts toward your degree.
