COVID-19 Protocol Updates

Effective May 24, 2021, Kirkwood has issued the following protocols for the entire Kirkwood community. These protocols are expectations for all college functions and activities. Protocols are subject to change as new guidance is released.

  • Employees and students, whether vaccinated on non-vaccinated, should not come to campus if they are sick or experiencing any flu-like symptoms.
    • Any employee or student, regardless of vaccination status, exhibiting any COVID-19 symptom must report to their supervisor or faculty member and the Kirkwood COVID-19 Hotline at 319-784-1650 for further guidance.
    • Employees are no longer required to complete a daily self-health survey.
  • The following masking and social distancing guidelines apply:
    • CDC guidelines no longer advise vaccinated individuals to mask or social distance.
    • Unvaccinated individuals are highly recommended to continue to follow CDC guidelines, including wearing masks in public and maintaining six feet of social distancing.
    • Anyone is welcome to wear a mask if they are more comfortable doing so.
    • PPE stations will still be available to everyone on campus.
    • We ask that employees and students respect the privacy of others by refraining from asking about their vaccination status. Vaccination status is a personal matter and should be treated as such. Asking someone about their vaccination status may cause them to feel pressured to share personal or private information. No one should feel this kind of pressure in the workplace or classroom. By avoiding questions regarding vaccination status, we are helping to ensure that others feel respected.
  • Throughout your daily interactions, frequently clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces at locations and in offices. Disinfectant and wipes will still be provided or requested from custodial services.

Instruction and Classroom Updates

  • Faculty are encouraged to start their courses by providing an update to the college’s COVID-19 protocols.
  • Standard classrooms for summer sessions will remain social distanced. All classrooms will be returned to normal capacity for fall 2021 start.
  • Faculty cannot issue any masking requirements for students in their courses and cannot inquire about a student’s vaccination status. The following masking and social distancing requirements apply:
    • CDC guidelines no longer advise vaccinated individuals to mask or social distance.
    • Unvaccinated individuals are highly recommended to continue to follow CDC guidelines including wearing masks in public and maintaining six feet of social distancing.
    • Anyone is welcome to wear a mask if they are more comfortable doing so.
  • Exceptions to the masking requirements may be granted to those departments connected to industries named in the CDC’s recommendations.
  • PPE stations will remain in major access point of buildings.
  • Food and drink is allowed in classrooms.
  • Faculty should continue with the classroom seating charts to aid in COVID Hotline contract tracing efforts.
  • Encourage students to wipe-in and wipe-out of learning spaces. Additional disinfectant will be supplied at faculty request.

Facilities Updates

  • Classroom chair installation remains a priority. By fall 2021, all classrooms will be returned to normal capacity. Soft seating and public space furniture is second priority and will be reinstalled throughout the summer semester.
  • Building-specific COVID-19 signage will be replaced to reflect updated protocols and standard college messaging.
  • While facilities remain focused on classroom cleaning, chair installation, and summer construction projects, the plexiglass dividers will remain in place.
  • No new COVID-related plexiglass or furniture modification requests will be granted unless HR has issued an accommodation.
  • External space reservations are open. External requests follow our normal rental procedures and groups must comply to Kirkwood’s protocols. All college rooms must be reserved using R25.
  • Wipe-in and wipe-out stations will remain in place for reserved classrooms and conference spaces. Additional disinfectant can be requested.
  • PPE stations will remain in major access points of buildings.
  • Hand dryers will be enabled and paper towel dispensers will remain in place.
  • Drinking fountains will be turned back on.
